Practical tip: how to make compost?

Good compost requires three important basics:

Green material - source of nitrogen

    • Debris of grass and young herbs
    • Uncooked fruit and vegetable skins
    • Months of coffee and tea bags

    Brown material - carbon source

    • Autumn leaves, hay, straw, shredded paper
    • Wood chips
    • Cardboard and plain paper (ideally shredded)

    Other materials

    • Wood ashes, eggshells, natural wool or cotton fibres.

Start with a layer of brown material at the bottom of the CompostAir, then a layer of green material and mix lightly.
Make sure you also add micro-organisms to speed up the composting process.
Once the CompostAir is full and different layers of material have been put in, cover it with the lid provided.
Make sure to check the moisture content and add water if necessary. Too much water creates a soggy mixture, and too much air dries out the materials.
Remember to check that the air tube at the bottom is free of debris for optimal aeration.

Good compost is crumbly with a sweet soil smell.
Good compost improves the soil structure and increases water retention.
