Organically grown (AB)
Good to know:
Sowing: March / May
Harvest: June / SeptemberThe "Moon and Stars" watermelon variety is an old line proposed as early as 1926 in the United States by the Peter Henderson company. Virtually extinct, it was rediscovered in Merle Van Doren's garden in Missouri. The fruits, weighing between 5 and 10 kg, and leaves have yellow spots, hence the name. Watermelons are round with dark pink flesh, green skin studded with yellow stars and at least one large yellow spot representing the "moon". They are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also crunchy and juicy, reaching maturity in 95-100 days.
To sow watermelon successfully, plant from March to May in pots or on a warm bed (between 20 and 30°C). The seedlings should be transplanted onto a warm bed 1 m apart in all directions, under a frame or plastic tunnel, which will be maintained until the end of June and then gradually aerated.
Watermelon plants should be planted in a warm, sunny spot. As soon as the plant has formed 4 to 6 leaves, it is advisable to prune the main stem to encourage branching and better fruiting. Water regularly at the base of the plants.
Watermelon "di Bagnacavallo" is harvested in mid-July under cover and in August outdoors champ. The fruit should be heavy and have a shiny, waxy appearance to indicate ripeness, and should not sound hollow.
