    Good to know :

    Sowing: March / April
    Harvest: July / October

The Tsakoniki eggplant, an ancient Greek variety, seduces with its violet fruits streaked with white, about 20-25 cm long. Its deliciously tasty, bitterness-free white flesh makes it an ideal choice for warm climates, reaching maturity in just 75 days.

To sow this eggplant successfully, start in March/April using cups of fine potting soil on a warm bed maintained at around 25°C, either indoors or in a heated greenhouse. Cover the seeds lightly with potting soil, pack down, and place the cups near a window for light exposure. Keep the soil moist, watering the surface lightly if necessary.

At transplanting time in late May, when the plants are about 15 cm tall, transplant them into cool, deep, humus-rich soil, 50 cm apart in all directions, in a warm, sunny spot. Be sure to hoe, weed and deadhead the plants, water regularly at the base, prune like tomatoes, and mulch to conserve soil moisture.

In terms of beneficial associations, eggplants can be planted alongside bush beans.

Eggplants can be harvested around 75 days after sowing. However, beware of potential pests such as mildew, red spider mites, Colorado beetles and aphids. In the event of attack, preventive and curative treatments based on organic products are recommended, such as nettle purin, horsetail tea, Bordeaux mixture, black soap or pyrethrum-based insecticides.
