    Organically grown (AB)

    Good to know:

    Sowing: February / April
    Harvest: July / September

The red currant tomato, also known as the "little sparrow", produces numerous small, round red fruits in clusters of around 20. These firm, tangy, sweet tomatoes are ideal for salads, aperitifs or candied. They are highly resistant to mildew and powdery mildew, and have an indeterminate growth habit, requiring solid support. This variety, derived from "Lycopersicon pimpinellifolium", is mildew-tolerant and ideal as rootstock.

To sow the red currant tomato successfully, sow from February to April in warm soil (20°C) or in pots indoors or in a heated greenhouse. Use a fine sowing mix and bury the seeds at 1 cm. Keep the potting soil moist by spraying with a sprayer. Place the seedlings near a window so they can benefit from the light. Transplant the plants in May, when they reach 12 to 15 cm, in rich, sunny soil, spacing them 70 cm between rows and 50 cm apart. Stake before planting and water abundantly once a week.

The question of disbudding tomatoes depends on personal preference. Although not compulsory, disbudding can increase fruit size and earliness. However, it is time-consuming and can cause wounds on the plants, requiring powdering to promote healing. Alternatively, leaving the plants to develop naturally requires more space but produces smaller, more numerous fruits. Another option is to lead the plants on two strands, pinching the foot 20 cm from the ground and removing the gourmands.
