    Good to know:

    Sowing: February / April
    Harvest: June / September

The Osu Blue tomato, also known as Bleue P20, is a rare variety of cocktail tomato with fruits 5 to 7 cm in diameter. Developed at the University of Oregon in the United States, it is distinguished by its pinkish-red flesh and slightly aromatic, fruity flavor. The fruit, dark purple in the sun, turns red when ripe. The leaves turn purple in cold weather. Each plant produces around 5 bunches, with 6 fruits per bunch.

To sow Osu Blue tomatoes, start from February to April on a warm bed (20°C) or in pots indoors or in a heated greenhouse, using a fine sowing mix. Bury the seeds 1 cm deep and water lightly to keep the soil moist. Place the pots near a window to ensure plenty of light. Transplant the 12-15 cm-high plants after the frosts, in rich, loose soil, with 70 cm between rows and 50 cm between plants, in a sunny position. Install stakes before planting, and water abundantly at the base once a week.

Pruning is not compulsory. Pruning can increase fruit size and earliness, but it is time-consuming and can leave wounds on the plants. An alternative is not to prune at all, requiring more space (1 m between plants) and producing smaller but more numerous fruit. A third method is to prune on two strands, pinching the plant 20 cm from the ground and keeping only the two lateral strands.

Tomatoes are harvested 4 to 5 months after sowing. The main problems encountered are downy mildew and black-bottom necrosis. To prevent downy mildew, protect plants from frequent rain and treat with Bordeaux mixture. Blossom end necrosis is caused by calcium deficiency or irregular watering. Water regularly and abundantly once a week.
