    Good to know:

    Sowing: February / April
    Harvest: June / September

The Chocolate Stripes tomato is an indeterminate variety from Ohio, producing large fruits 8 to 10 cm in diameter, weighing around 180 grams. The fruits, mahogany with green and black stripes, have a complex, rich, sweet flavor. This mid-season tomato (65 to 80 days) is eaten mainly in salads and bears fruit until autumn.

To sow Chocolate Stripes tomatoes, sow from February to April on a warm bed (20°C) or in pots indoors or in a heated greenhouse, in fine sowing compost. Bury seeds 1 cm deep and cover with potting soil. Water the potting soil with a sprayer to keep it moist. Place the terrine near a window to ensure good light. Transplant when frost is no longer a concern and plants are 12-15 cm tall. Space plants 70 cm apart between rows and 50 cm apart in rows, in rich, loose soil. Install stakes before planting and water abundantly at the base once a week.

There are several ways of pruning tomatoes. Pruning by removing side shoots is not compulsory, but can increase fruit size and earliness. This method is time-consuming and can cause wounds to the plant. An alternative is not to prune at all, which requires more space in the garden. Another option is two-stem pruning, where the plant is pinched back 20 cm from the ground and only two side shoots are left.

Chocolate Stripes tomatoes can be harvested 4 to 5 months after sowing. Their main enemies are mildew and apical necrosis (black ass). To avoid mildew, protect your plants from frequent rainfall and treat with Bordeaux mixture. Apical necrosis, caused by low calcium levels or irregular watering, can be prevented by regular, abundant watering.
