Good to know :
Sowing: May / June
Harvest: October / NovemberThe red Gniff carrot, an old and late variety, is distinguished by its purple skin and white flesh, originating from the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. It has an elegant appearance and keeps well, but requires well-drained soil, as it is sensitive to excess moisture...
To sow the red Gniff carrot successfully, it is essential to proceed with care. Sowing should take place from May to early June, and harvesting can begin from early autumn through to winter.
Carefully prepare the seedbed by fine-tuning the soil and watering well. Sow the seeds clearly in rows spaced between 10 cm and 30 cm apart, in a sunny position, then cover them with a mixture of fine soil and sand for a few millimetres. Water lightly in fine rain and place a P17-type veil over the seedbed to keep the soil moist until the seedlings develop. Keep the soil moist during this period.
Carry out a first thinning when the plants have 4 or 5 leaves. Then carry out a second thinning.
It's important to hoe and weed regularly around carrot plants, and to water in dry spells to ensure their healthy development.
For beneficial associations with carrots, you can plant radishes nearby, which will avoid repeated thinning and repel red spiders. Onions, garlic and leeks are also favourable, as they help repel carrot flies.
To preserve carrots, let them dry for 1-2 days on the ground, then cut the leaves off flush with the collar and clean them without washing. Once dry, place them in sand in the cellar for better preservation.
As far as carrot pests are concerned, the carrot fly is the main problem. Its larvae burrow into the roots, causing the foliage to wither. To combat them, opt for prevention through beneficial associations, decoctions of tansy and lavender, and the application of an anti-insect veil. Root aphids can also cause significant damage, but a treatment based on nettle purin can be used to combat this threat.
