Good to know :
Sowing: March / April
Harvest: July / OctoberThe dwarf early variety of Bambino eggplant is a little wonder for small spaces such as pots or small gardens, with its compact height of 40 cm and stocky habit. Its cocktail-type fruits are remarkable for their violet color and round shape, around 3 cm in diameter. They offer a crunchy texture, juicy flesh and the characteristic, subtly bitter flavor of eggplant, perfect for livening up kebabs. This variety reaches maturity in just 45 to 65 days.
Tips for successful Bambino eggplant sowing:
For the best start, sow the seeds in pots filled with fine potting soil as early as March or April, at a constant temperature of 25°C on a warm bed, either indoors or in a heated greenhouse. Lightly press the seeds into the potting soil, then gently tamp down. Place the pots near a window to benefit from natural light. Be sure to water the surface lightly if the potting soil starts to dry out.
Planting eggplants:
Once the young plants are about 15 cm tall, transplant them into the ground towards the end of May. Choose cool, deep, humus-rich soil with a warm, sunny exposure. Place the plants about 50 cm apart. After planting, hoeing, weeding and ridging are essential. Don't forget to water regularly at the base of the plants, prune them as you would tomatoes, then mulch the soil to conserve moisture.
Beneficial associations :
Dwarf beans make good companions for eggplants, promoting their mutual growth.
Harvesting eggplants:
You'll be able to harvest your eggplants around 3 months after sowing, once they've reached maturity and full flavor.
Managing pests:
If mildew appears as gray-green spots on the leaves, with white felting underneath, take preventive measures such as hoeing and watering with nettle manure and horsetail tea. Bordeaux mixture can also be used. To combat red spider mites, remove the affected parts and use black soap or nettle manure. Colorado beetles can be collected manually, while for aphids, a treatment with black soap or nettle manure can be effective. In the event of heavy infestation, a plant-based biological insecticide may also be considered.
