    Good to know :

    Sowing: March / June
    Harvest: September / November

Uchiki Kuri, a Japanese wonder, is distinguished by its exquisite chestnut flavor. Early and generous, this variety produces fruit weighing between 1.2 and 1.5 kg. Its orange-red flesh, rich in carotene, can be enjoyed both raw and cooked, in salads, cakes and breads. What's more, it keeps well in a cool, dry place, so you can enjoy it all winter long.

For successful sowing, start in April in pots, in a bright spot with a minimum temperature of 12°C. Place the seeds on edge and water gently to keep the soil moist, but not too much to avoid rotting. Place your pots near a light source to encourage germination.

In May, once the risk of frost has passed, transplant the plants outdoors, spacing them 1 m apart in all directions for non-running varieties, and 1.20 m along the rows with 2 m between rows for running varieties. An application of compost is beneficial. Pinch stems to stimulate growth, hoe and weed regularly. Mulching at the base of the plants will help conserve moisture and reduce weeds. Water directly at the base, without wetting the foliage, to avoid disease.

For the best garden combinations, avoid planting your pumpkins close to potatoes. On the other hand, they will enjoy the company of beans and cabbages.

Occasionally, your plants may fail to produce flowers or fruit. This may be due to hot weather, which favours male flowers to the detriment of females, or to a lack of pollination. Pollinating insects are essential for transferring pollen from male to female flowers. Attract these insects by sowing floral mixes nearby.

Pumpkins are harvested between September and November, before the first frost in October. To know when your squash are ready, observe the stalk, which should become corky. Cut the fruit as close as possible to the stem, leave to dry for a day in the sun, then store in a dry, well-ventilated place at a temperature of 12 to 20°C. For small quantities, a cupboard at home is ideal.

This way, you can enjoy this delicious variety of Uchiki Kuri pumpkin, which will liven up your dishes all year round.
