With their varied shapes and colors, these tomatoes will transform your kitchen garden into a veritable place of discovery. Their aroma and flavour will give your dishes a whole new taste.

The Barbaniaka tomato, a highly productive, early Hungarian variety, produces numerous clusters of small, round, red fruits weighing 3 to 5g. This variety, which doesn't need pruning, is renowned for its burst-resistant, very sweet fruit, with an excellent balance between acidity and sweetness. Perfect as an aperitif or to garnish salads and dishes.

Sow tomato seeds from February to April, either on a warm bed at 20°C, or in pots indoors or in a heated greenhouse, using a fine sowing mix. Tomatoes need a constant temperature of at least 20°C to germinate. Bury the seeds 1 cm deep, cover with potting soil, and water with a sprayer to keep the potting soil moist but not soggy. Place your seedlings near a window to ensure they receive sufficient light.

Transplant when they reach 12-15 cm and there's no risk of frost, in rich, loose, healthy soil. Space rows 70 cm apart and plants 50 cm apart in a sunny spot. Place stakes before planting and water abundantly once a week to prevent disease.

There are differing views on how to prune tomatoes by dripping. Some gardeners believe that this practice, although not compulsory, increases the size and earliness of the fruit and facilitates harvesting. However, it is time-consuming and can cause wounds to the plants. It's advisable to use maerl or green clay to help the wounds heal.

Others prefer not to prune at all, leaving the plants to develop fully. This requires more space (1 m between each plant), but produces more fruit, albeit smaller. Another method is to lead the plants on two strands, keeping only the two main lateral branches after pinching the plant 20 cm from the ground and removing all other suckers.

You can start harvesting tomatoes 4-5 months after sowing.

The main problems are downy mildew and black-bottom necrosis. To prevent downy mildew, protect your plants in rainy areas and treat them with Bordeaux mixture. Blossom end necrosis is caused by a lack of calcium in the soil or irregular watering. To avoid this, water regularly and abundantly once a week.
