    Good to know :

    Sowing: February / April
    Harvest: July / October

The San Marzano 2 tomato is a highly productive seasonal variety, producing elongated red fruits weighing 50 to 100 g, grouped in clusters of around 5. Known for its dense, firm flesh, it's perfect for eating fresh or cooked (dried tomatoes, sauces). This indeterminate-growth tomato can reach a height of around 1 metre in full sun champ without staking. Originally from Italy, it remains an essential reference.

To sow the San Marzano 2 tomato, proceed from February to April. Use a warm bed (20°C) or pots indoors or in a heated greenhouse, with fine potting soil. Tomatoes need a constant temperature of 20°C to germinate. Bury seeds 1 cm deep and cover with potting soil. Water with a sprayer to keep the potting soil moist but not soggy. Place your seedlings near a window to prevent them from stretching towards the light. Transplant when frost is no longer a concern and the plants are 12-15 cm tall. Plant in rich, well-drained soil, at a distance of 70 cm between rows and 50 cm on the row, in a sunny spot. Install stakes before planting and water abundantly at the base once a week to prevent disease.

Pruning tomato plants is a matter of debate. Some gardeners recommend it to increase fruit size and earliness, and to facilitate harvesting. However, this method requires time and attention, as it can be difficult to distinguish the head of the plant from a secondary shoot. What's more, removing the gourmands creates wounds on the plant, requiring care to heal. Another approach is not to prune at all, allowing the plant to develop fully, but requiring more space (1 meter between each plant) with smaller but more numerous fruits. A third method consists of leading the plant on two strands, pinching the stalk 20 cm from the ground and keeping only two lateral branches, while removing the other gourmands.

San Marzano 2 tomatoes can be harvested 4-5 months after sowing.

The main enemies of tomatoes are downy mildew and black-bottom necrosis. To prevent mildew, protect your plants from frequent rainfall and apply a Bordeaux mixture-based treatment. Blossom end necrosis is not a disease, but results from calcium deficiency in the soil or irregular watering. Water regularly and abundantly, about once a week, to avoid this problem.
