Good to know :
Sowing: April / June
Harvest: May / AugustThe Genovese zucchini, a bushy, non-runny variety, is distinguished by its light-green, gray-mottled fruits and early ripening. Ideal for various culinary preparations such as ratatouille, gratins, tians and stuffed zucchini, it is appreciated for its delicate flavor.
To sow Genovese zucchini successfully, we recommend planting in April, in pots, in a bright spot with a minimum temperature of 12°C, as the seeds need heat to germinate. The seeds should be placed on edge, and the soil kept moist with a sprayer, but not too much to avoid rotting. The pots should be placed near a light source.
In May, when the plants are ready to be transplanted, choose a sunny spot with 1-meter spacing in all directions. Compost is recommended for optimum growth. Stems should be pinched to stimulate development, and regular hoeing and weeding are necessary to keep the soil aerated and limit weeds. Mulching at the base of plants helps conserve moisture and reduce weed competition. Watering should be done at the base of the plant, avoiding wetting the foliage to prevent disease.
Zucchini enjoy close proximity to beans and cabbages, but it's best to keep them away from potatoes to avoid unfavorable interactions.
A common problem with zucchinis is the absence of flowers or fruit. This may be due to hot weather, which favours the production of male flowers to the detriment of female ones, thus affecting pollination. Pollination by insects is essential for fruiting. If your garden lacks pollinators, we recommend sowing floral mixes to attract them.
Harvesting of Genovese zucchinis begins around two months after sowing. For optimum flavor, harvest zucchini young, before they become too large and bitter.
