    Good to know:

    Sowing: April / June
    Harvest: June / August

Zucchini Verte de Milan, also known as Black Beauty, is an extremely productive, non-runner variety, distinguished by its earliness. It produces magnificent dark-green fruits measuring between 18 and 20 cm in length.

For successful sowing, start in April, using pots placed in a well-lit spot, with a minimum temperature of 12°C, necessary for seed germination. Place the seeds on edge and water gently to keep the soil moist but not excessively so, to avoid rotting. Place the pots near a light source for optimum growth.

During cultivation, transplant seedlings outdoors in mid-May, spacing them one metre apart in all directions to leave enough room for non-runners. Water regularly and enrich the soil with compost. Pinch the stems to stimulate development, hoe and weed to keep the soil clean, and mulch around the plants to conserve moisture and limit weeds. In summer, water at the foot of the plants without wetting the foliage to avoid disease.

Zucchini Verte de Milan goes well with beans and cabbage, but avoid planting it near potatoes.

Your plants may fail to produce flowers or fruit, a common problem with cucurbits. Hot weather can encourage the production of male flowers to the detriment of the female flowers needed for fruiting. What's more, a lack of pollination due to a shortage of pollinating insects can prevent fruit formation. To overcome this problem, attract pollinators by planting melliferous flowers near your zucchinis.

Zucchini are harvested around two months after sowing. For optimum flavor, harvest them young; smaller zucchini are less bitter than those that have grown too much. Enjoy these delicious fruits in your dishes all season long.
