Carentan carrot seeds allow you to grow a classic variety of carrot, native to the Carentan region in Normandy, France. Carentan carrots are appreciated for their cylindrical shape, mild flavor and crunchy texture. To grow Carentan carrots successfully, you can start by sowing the seeds directly into the soil before the last expected frost.

Choose a sunny spot in your garden with loose, well-drained, rock-free soil. Carentan carrots need regular watering to keep the soil evenly moist. Be sure to weed regularly around the plants to avoid weed competition. Once the carrots have reached their mature size, they can be harvested by gently pulling the leaves out of the ground. Carentan carrots are delicious eaten fresh, raw or cooked. They can be used in a variety of dishes, from salads to stews, and even preserved by canning or lacto-fermentation.

    Good to know :

    Sowing: March / June
    Harvest: June / October

Carotte de Carentan, a heartless variety with red flesh, stands out for its quality and fragrance. Early and suitable for spring or summer crops, it keeps well.

For successful sowing, plant from March to June for a summer harvest from June to October. Carefully prepare the seedbed by fine-tuning the soil, watering it and giving it a sunny exposure. Cover the seeds with a mixture of fine soil and sand for a few millimetres, then water with a light rain. Use a P17-type veil to maintain humidity until the seedlings appear. Thin seedlings to 4-5 leaves, then 7-8 cm apart. Hoe and weed regularly, and water in dry spells.

Carrots go well with radishes, which reduce the need to thin rows and keep red spiders at bay. Grow them close to onions, garlic or leeks to repel carrot flies.

To preserve carrots, let them dry out on the ground for 1-2 days, cut the leaves off flush with the collar, clean them without washing them, and place them in sand in the cellar.

The carrot fly is their main enemy, its larvae burrowing into the roots. To combat them, practice prevention with beneficial associations, decoctions of tansy and lavender, or use an anti-insect veil. Root aphids can also cause damage, against which a treatment with nettle manure is effective.
