Annual mugwort, or Artemisia Annua, emerges as a sentinel of Chinese medicine, an ancestral medicinal plant with a powerful fragrance, native to the distant lands of China. Sometimes rising as high as 3 meters, it dominates the garden with its imposing presence, releasing a bewitching scent into the air. In addition to its digestive virtues, it has been used for centuries in Chinese pharmacopoeia, offering its benefits to those who cultivate and consume it.In addition to its medicinal properties, annual mugwort stands out for its usefulness in the fight against insects, offering the possibility of creating effective repellent decoctions.
In addition to its therapeutic qualities, it is also an attractive plant in the garden, lending itself to the creation of ephemeral hedges or delicate borders, adding a touch of elegance to the environment.
The best time to sow annual mugwort is in spring or autumn. The delicate seeds are placed in trays under a light shelter, uncovered, to take full advantage of the light necessary for germination. Constant humidity, provided by a vaporizer, encourages the emergence of the first shoots. When the young plants reach the 5-6 leaf stage, they can be transplanted into pots, ready to continue growing.
Patience is essential, as germination can take several weeks, but the show that follows will be well worth the effort.
For planting, a well-drained, light soil is preferable, offering mugwort an environment in which it can flourish. A generous spacing of 60 cm to 1 metre between plants allows each to find its place and thrive in complete freedom.
