    Good to know:

    Sowing: March / April
    Harvest: June / October

Green-leaf basil, with its bushy, compact habit, has long been used in India, notably in Ayurvedic medicine, for its detoxifying, anti-stress, anti-infectious and anti-inflammatory virtues, particularly when consumed as an infusion.

To sow basil successfully, it's essential to maintain a constant temperature of at least 20°C, ideally on a warm bed or in a heated greenhouse. Start your seedlings in early spring in pots, using a quality potting soil. Seeds should not be sunk deep into the potting soil; after placing them, sprinkle a little soil on top if necessary and pack firmly. Water with a spray bottle to keep the soil moist, but not saturated. Germination generally takes 6-8 days. Place your pots near a bright window.

To plant basil in the garden, wait until after the last frosts, around May, when the plants have reached the 3 to 4-leaf stage (wait until June if you're north of the Loire). Plant in well-drained, rich, sunny soil, leaving around 50 cm between each plant. Don't over-water the foliage.

Basil leaves are best harvested in May and June, just before flowering, to get the best fragrance. However, you can harvest leaves all year round as long as the plant still has some. The more leaves you harvest, the more the plant will grow. To preserve basil, chop the leaves and place in ice cube trays filled with water, or store in olive oil.

Finally, planting basil between tomato plants can protect them from certain pests. All varieties of basil can be grown in pots, window boxes or balconies.
