Good to know :
Sowing: March / June
Harvest: April / SeptemberStinging nettle, also known as Great Nettle, stands proudly, sometimes reaching up to 1 metre in height when fully mature.
This versatile plant is more than just a weed. In fact, it finds its place on our plates as a vegetable in its own right, adding its unique flavor and nutritional benefits to our soups and other dishes. But that's not all: stinging nettle also plays an essential role in traditional medicine, offering tonic, depurative, diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties.
In the garden, nettle doesn't go unnoticed. It thrives in nitrogen-rich soil and often colonizes neglected areas. But far from being a mere undesirable, it helps to improve soil health by absorbing excess phosphates and nitrates.
However, nettle's main interest lies in the production of the famous nettle purin, a veritable elixir for plants. When macerated, it becomes a powerful ally, offering fungicidal, growth-stimulating and insect-repellent properties.
With so many beneficial uses, it would be a shame to go without nettle in the garden. But to keep it from growing too large, opt for growing it in large pots or window boxes.
For sowing, spring is the ideal time. Once emerged, the young plants can be transplanted into the ground, provided that frosts are no longer a threat. Soil rich in organic matter and half-shade will provide the perfect conditions for them to flourish.
